Luggage Decisions-
Published Saturday, July 31st 2021 - Updated Monday, February 5th 2024Luggage Basics
1. Decide How You’ll Use It:
Is it for flying, driving, cruising, or some other purpose? For airplane travel, understand the luggage rules.
For road trips, pliable luggage will maximize trunk space. For cruise ships (where baggage is stacked in the
boat’s belly before departure) flat, rigid luggage is best.
2. Consider How You’ll Store It:
Hard-sided bags are the most unforgiving, soft-sided structured bags have a little forgiveness on the front
and back, and un-structured duffels - or new collapsible bags - can store anywhere.
3. Know Which Size You Need:
This will depend mainly on the length of your trip and - if you are flying -
airline luggage restrictions. It also depends on your own habits. Some people
can pack for two weeks in their carry-on and an under-seat personal item. I like to take 2 suitcases and check them when I am travel for more than 3-4 days.
4. What size is good?
Personal item
Your personal item like a purse or small handbag must fit under the seat in front of you. Dimensions should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm).
Diaper bags (1 per child), soft-sided cooler bags with breast milk, child safety seats, strollers and medical or mobility devices don’t count as your personal item or carry-on.
Carry-on requirements
- Shouldn’t exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches / 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters (including handles and wheels)
- Must fit in the sizer at the airport
If your items don’t fit in the overhead bin or under the seat, they may need to be checked. There may be additional carry-on bag restrictions at certain airports or on certain airplanes.
We recommend labeling your carry-on the same way you do checked bags in case this happens.
Soft-sided garment bags up to 51 inches / 130 cm (length + width + height) can also be taken as your carry-on item.
Musical instruments are also considered a carry-on item and must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Checked Luggage-
Most airlines calculate the size limits of your bag by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, length + width + height.
For most regions your checked bag allowance is:
- Dimension: 62 in
- Weight: 50 lbs
- For First / Business, weight is 70 lbs for complimentary bags and 50 lbs for excess charged bags
